News: Arrest made after driver steals car, causes crash in Toronto

TORONTO, ON – A 19-year-old man was arrested after stealing a vehicle and then causing a collision with two other cars, resulting in some property damage Tuesday.

Toronto Police said the crash happened at the South Drive and Sherbourne Street North intersection. Prior to the collision, the man, identified as 19-year-old Malik Young, had stolen the car in the area of Yonge Street and Dundas Street, which happened before 1:45 a.m.

Details from police indicated that the victim, whose car got stolen, had left with their vehicle as the engine was still running. In that brief moment, with the victim’s back turned, that is when Young swopped in, got inside the car, and drove away.

The victim followed Young, which then led to a collision with the mentioned property damage. Additional information from Toronto CTV News revealed that Young had crashed into a lawn and possibly a building, as bricks came undone and scattered. A tree and fence were also damaged, and they came tumbling down.

Police said Young was hospitalized for non-life-threatening wounds, although they did not say if anyone else was hurt. They arrested him, and Young was charged with “Fail(ure) to Comply Undertaking, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, Theft of Motor Vehicle.

Since this news release was made public, Young has since made a court appearance at Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, that occurred at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
